Two actors from India, “prancing” Gibreel Farishta and “buttony, pursed” Saladin Chamcha, are flying across the English Channel when the first of many implausible events occurs: the jet explodes. As the two men plummet to the earth, “like titbits of tobacco from a broken old cigar,” they argue, sing and are transformed. When they are found on an English beach, the only survivors of the blast, Gibreel has sprouted a halo while Saladin has developed hooves, hairy legs and the beginnings of what seem like horns. About the Author

Salman Rushdie is the author of fourteen previous novels, including Midnight’s Children (for which he won the Booker Prize and the Best of the Booker), Shame, The Satanic Verses, The Moor’s Last Sigh, and Quichotte, all of which have been shortlisted for the Booker Prize; a collection of stories, East, West; a memoir, Joseph Anton; a work of reportage, The Jaguar Smile; and three collections of essays, most recently Languages of Truth. Terrific book. No real reason to add to the other 200+ reviews, I'm sure the other guys covered all relevant points. Wikipedia has a decent synopsis on the subject, but they do give the ending away. Anything that inspired an Islamic fatwa in the 80s is probably progressive. The entertainment value was a bonus.Signed,An Iranian American

This really is a masterpiece of magical realism and one of the top novels of our time. When I first started in on it I struggled, but once I surrendered myself to the words and imagery the story flowed like liquid silk, weaving a complex, amazing tale. The use of dreams, different times, places, eras, religion and characters is just amazing to me. How Rushdie created this world, has left me in awe. Truly one of the greats!

Great read in the genre of magic realism. Only Rushdie's metaphoric genius could blend the (then) current social milieu with such absorbing storytelling. Without giving any more spoilers, loved one of the central characters vacillations between the real world and its hallucinations.

I was a kid when the controversy around this book hit, and I guess for that reason I always thought it was a very heavy, tedious, high-brow work. In fact, "The Satanic Verses" is a fun and funny narrative. The style reminded me of Gabriel Garcia Marquez -- the lines between the supernatural and the mundane are erased.For Western readers who do not know as much about Islam as they might like to think (count me as one!), the book can actually serve as a guided tour of the religion. As I read this book, I looked up every event and name that seemed significant and I learned so much about Islam. It also becomes obvious why some Muslims would be offended. "The Satanic Verses" shakes the premise of the faith moreso than "The DaVinci Code" or "The Last Temptation of Christ" does Christianity.The last fifty or so pages were so intense that I could only read them in short bursts. I am usually bored with fiction because most authors telegraph plot and character developments. Nothing is a surprise, you can see it coming a mile away. "The Satanic Verses" kept me guessing and challenged. It was the most satisfying reading experience I've had in a while.

This is a stunningly good book. It's worth reading many times over. So glad I read the PDF version, because I was looking up phrases, literary references, and word meanings constantly.

I am reading this for the third time. It is one of my favorite books. Mr. Rushdie obviously has a brilliant, quick intellect. This book is comprised of several stories, mostly centering on the experiences of a man who is elevated to the status of an angel, the other demoted to the status of a devil. Even though this book has a large imaginative and intellectual scope, there are some scenes of such tenderness and pathos that lead me to believe that Mr. Rushdie is a most compassionate soul. However, even though I have read it several times, I am still unable to determine if Mr. Rushdie had any theme in mind or if he was just spewing out his brilliant mind. The book starts with the two protagonists falling through the sky after the plane they were riding was hijacked and bombed by a terrorist. For what seems forever, Mr. Rushdie creates the sensation of falling, falling, falling. This book is a tour de force of writing.Actually, there are two possible themes that are coming to mind. First is the pain of not belonging which is shown clearly by the lives of South Asian and black immigrants in London; and very poignantly by a character in India who earns his living as a clown. He was born a lower caste Hindu and to escape the pain of it converted to Islam, but he isn't even accepted in that world either. His only true companion is his pet bull who he dresses up and uses in his clown acts. The other possible theme could be the paradox of good and evil existing side by side. Gibreel Farishta's lover's father, a Holocaust survivor, says, "'...the most dangerous of all the lies we are fed in our lives,' which was in his opinion, the idea of the continuum. 'Anybody ever tries to tell you how this most beautiful and most evil of planets is somehow homogenous, composed only of reconcilable elements, that it all adds up, you get on the phone to the straightjacket tailor...'"Yes, there is a destructive Mahound and imam who either themselves or whose helpers torture and gorge on innocent people, but that is a fact of life. I read several reviews in which the writers were claiming that Rushdie was being spiteful in writing this book, but even though I believe he knew exactly what were going to be the results of publishing it, I doubt he meant spite. An artist reacts intellectually and emotionally to the world around them, gets ideas, thoughts, tastes, and a writer is compelled to write them. However, I am waiting for someone to write a novel about a writer with only one successful book behind him, whose sales are diminishing, who makes an arrangement with a notorious religious despot that he will write a disparaging expose and the despot will put a fatwa on his head, thereby ensuring fame and fortune for them both by the sheer magnitude of the ensuring notoriety.
